Summary
Reports on Poughkeepsie convention. Still proceeding calmly. Thinks leaders of opposition more extreme in their views than most of their followers who are not, in greater number, trying to reject Constitution wholly. Most want either recommendatory amendments, explanatory ones, or absolute and previous amendments. A few advocate separation from the Union. "The people, however, are gradually coming right, notwithstanding the singular pains taken to prevent it." New Hampshire's ratification has done much good; Virginia's would do more.
