- Summary
- Progress of negotiations. Respect for Washington's probity and good will did much to make English Government amenable to constructive negotiations. Treaty endangered by events at Monroe's arrival in Paris. British confidence in victory over French. Dinner given him by merchants engaged in American trade. Nation sees personal honor and national honor at stake in war against French "Jacobinism." John Jay does not think war system as strong as it might be. British seem to feel that troubles with America in nature of a "family quarrel." John Jay's opinion of George III. Knows Treaty will meet with opposition in United States Cool and calm consideration demanded. Does not agree with Randolph on West India article. Sees it as "ice-breaker" for further concessions.
