United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
Summary
Last Wednesday the French ambassador received the enclosed declaration,
which made a big splash. The king (of Prussia) will no longer take open steps to support
the pretensions of the prince, having promised the French court to abstain from actions
diametrically opposed to French interests. Never can France compromise her alliance with
this republic in allowing the prince to hold onto to much real influence. The French
king rewarded DumasÆ service to the United States with a pension of 1500 livres, half to
go to his daughter after his death, through the interest of the Marquis de Verac and
Comte de Vergennes. Wishes Jay to inform Congress of this development. Two important
resolutions, one about reform of bourgeoisie of Rotterdam, the other about elections to
remove the oligarchy of a few families. Financial support of French shows the importance
of the Dutch republic to them. Tomorrow will be huge spectacle in Rotterdam celebrating
the alliance between France and the Netherlands. In French.
