- Summary
- Acknowledges receipt of 12 August. Thomson hopes to see John Jay soon in order to talk with him about his acceptance of the post of Foreign Secretary and also about the state of affairs in the United States. At present there is no one to attend to national affairs, and the committee of states has quite unwarrantably dispersed. The appearance of "seeds of jealousy and internal commotion" coincide with the coming departure of the Superintendent of Finance and the isolation of the foreign ministers abroad. When things are at such a pass, "the insidious designs of our late enemy, or the deep rooted jealousy of our Southern Neighbors" are to be feared. However, a little common sense and attention, and Jay's acceptance of the post offered to him will improve matters considerably. Thomson encloses a letter for Jay from an unknown correspondent forwarded to him by Mrs. Montgomery. Enclosure: [before 18 September 1784?], to Jay.
