Summary
Mr. Thaxter is the bearer of this letter and is also carrying the definitive treaty. Mr. Hartley, who will soon confer with the ministers about commerce, is convinced that Great Britain will be liberal. John Jay feels that the projected treaty of commerce should be temporary, and should observe exact reciprocity because "such Treaties if unequal and full of Restrictions, may in Time be very disadvantageous, tho' at present convenient." John Jay wishes to return home in the summer, and hopes that "my Friends will not think of employing me in Europe in any way that might interfere with it." The several prints John Jay is enclosing depict an interesting subject: "They will explain themselves."
