Summary:
Acknowledges receipt of 29 August. John Jay is very sorry to hear of the death of Lord Amherst. His Lordship's estates in America, which have been inherited by his nephew, will gradually become more valuable, but not proportionally productive. The reason some articles in Mr. van Alen's accounts may appear excessively high is because of the wages paid in America for physical labor. The demand for such labor far exceeds the supply of workers.
