Summary:
Acknowledges receipt of 30 August. John Jay was sorry to hear of the death of Lord Amherst's uncle. From Mr. van Alen's accounts of his uncle's estate, Lord Amherst can see that higher wages are paid in America for physical labor than anywhere else in the world. Last season, ordinary reapers received one dollar plus food, drink and lodging. Rents for land in America are low and disproportionate to the value of the land. As more land becomes settled, however, rents will rise.
