- Summary
- Washington was informed of a considerable movement of the enemy upon New York and Staten Island. The actual embarkation of nine regiments was reported to Washington last night by Major Lennox. Lennox did not know their destination but the fact that they were provided with thin clothing makes him think they were bound for Georgia or the West Indies. General Maxwell reported a rumor that transports had gone to bring off the garrison of Rhode Island. In the hand of Tench Tilghman. Fitzpatrick Washington XIV, 437-438 Washington has just received from General Maxwell news of a considerable movement of the enemy upon New York and Staten Island, and a report that General Leslie is to sail for Georgia or the West Indies with nine regiments within a few days. The embarkation of the nine regiments with thin clothing and baggage and stores was confirmed last evening. Maxwell also heard that transports were sent off to Rhode Island. As soon as Washington hears more news of this fleet, he will notify Jay. In hand of Tench Tilghman.
