Summary
Autograph Letter signed, with postscript of August 7. In letter of July, Trumbull acknowledges Jay's letters of June 3 and duplicate of October 20. Particularly grateful for "wise reflexions and Councils" in the October letter. Trumbull's expectations of delicacy of task as Commissioner fulfilled--indeed, finds task even more difficult than expected. Hopes Lord Malmsbury's negotiations with French Commissioners at Lisle will meet with success. Looks "with anxiety" for "proceedings of our councils" and hopes that joint Commissioners can succeed in "averting from our Country, once more, the worst of Evils." In the postscript of August 7, Trumbull reports on the "Awards" payable at the Treasury in London on July 1. Those unpaid on that date a cause of anxiety until payment made. Refers to the questions that "rest on my feeble Shoulders." Lords of Apeal have not decided more than 30 causes of the vast number before them. Martinique cases not yet decided in Admiralty courts; April 1798 the next date set for expiration of claims. Document 7208 is another Autograph Letter signed version, lacking the August postscript. Document 10356 is a letterbook version (also lacking postscript of August 7).
