Summary
Reply to Grenville's letter of 30 August. Having studied the "projets" and maps enclosed in this letter, Jay observes that there are in these projets" several parting points ... some of them ...maybe easily accommodated, but there are others which create in his mind serious apprehensions." One of these articles is that concerning the determination of the northern boundary of the United States Grenville's suggestions concerning the determination of this boundary would involve, in John Jay's eyes, accession of United States territory-- a matter which lies beyond the scope of his powers and accession which, he feels the United States would be unwilling to make. This, however, he continues, is a "secondary" matter and should not stand in the way of the "primary" objects of the negotiation Asks Grenville to set date and time for conversations concerning the articles.
