- Summary
- Has not been able to write for two years due to "a Series of occurances" - Mrs. Jay's illness and death, his own ill health, removal to Bedford, and son's ill health. Post once a week brings newspapers which furnish a history of the times by which we are taught the vanity of expecting that the multitude will become virtuous and wise, or their demagogues candid and honest. As G. Morris says, however, "What is, is." Not too much news known about friends at Albany. Benson again at the Bar, which Jay regrets. "If these are not upside down times they certainly are up and down times, but Athens the city of Philosophers and Rome the city of everything saw and felt much worse."
