- Summary
- "Duplicate" Autograph Letter Signed. Confides the details of her brother Brockholst's behavior in Spain. "Constant captiosness & sulkiness" have marked his bearing since their arrival. Gives specific instances of his insolence and indescretion. Goes on to describe Carmichael's equally unpleasant behavior which compounds Brockholst's since the two have "formed the strictest intimacy." Concludes: "Should my brother attempt to excuse his return with plausible reasons I wish they may be expected, you cannot but see the disadvantage it would be to him shouold his conduct be scrutinized or exposed." Endorsement by John Jay explaining that this is a copy of a letter sent to Catharine Livingston to be shown to Governor Livingston only if Brockholst's "misrepresentations" should warrant it. The endorsement concludes: "N.B. It never was delivered to him--his confidence in him remaining indiminished."
