Summary
Sentiments on death of a great man draw Jay's sympathy. Her nephew cannot be considered a stranger by Jay. Amherst estate in America, despite good management, cannot yield profit immediately though future worth will be great. Renting rare, most buy land. Van Alen's accounts: his rate for service may appear high; but supply for mental services equals the demand whereas demand for physical labor exceeds supply in this country. Jay's son in New York studying law; honors the remembrance of England and Lady Amherst.
