- Summary
- Jay's letter of introduction for Cuyler misplaced and not received until Cutler had left Belmont. Inquires about report from B. Gilbert of Cherry Valley that quitrents are due on the Belevedere Patent in which Peters and John Barclay have an interest as trustees of his (Peters's) father's estate. Recites history of the parcel, dating back to a suit against George Croghan before the Revolution; complications of many patentholders being Loyalists, etc. Asks Jay's assistance in the matter. Hopes "the Tempest in Europe is blowing its last Hurricane." Sees no reason to send envoys to negotiate with the French. Hopes for fall of the Directory. Annual yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. "Thousands will besacrificed before the disagreeable Truth of its Origin among ourselves is believed."
