- Summary
- Acknowledges receipt to John Jay's letter of 7 September Sent a copy of the letter to General Lee "knowing well that there existed no person in the U. States for whom he entertained such high respect and veneration as for yourself." General Lee is recovering from wounds. Memoirs will soon be published in Philadelphia. Have sent copy of John Jay's letter to publishers. Has written to Colonel Nicholas Fish in hope that Fish would join in efforts to change political administration. Fears letter has been "suppressed" in the post office, or that Fish's party fears any contact with South or West and may even seek disunion. Hints that John Jay should learn whether Fish has received the proposal and what Fish's reaction is.
