Summary
Jay would have written sooner, but expected to see Schuyler. Jay received thecopies of orders, etc. on his return journey from Philadelphia and sent them toDuane. Sympathizes with Schuyler on his exposure to "malevolence and Envy."Washington and Congress have asserted that Schuyler's removal was necessary toinsure that the New England militia would serve. Advices Schuyler to take"care . . . lest Posterity be influenced in their opinions of your Characterand Conduct by the Tales and Prejudices of the present Day."
