Summary
"Extra" edition of the American Spy" , dated "Lansingburgh, June 30,
1792." Account of Jay's arrival in the town that morning and his welcome at Platt's Inn
by C. Lansing and others, a committee of local Jay supporters. The extra reprints the
committee's address of welcome and support as well as an expression of their "sincere
regret and resentment at the palpable prostitution of those principles of virtue,
patriotisim and duty which has been displayed by a majority of the canvassing committee"
in the gubernatorial election dispute between Jay and George Clinton. Jay's reply, too,
is printed in full. He thanks the committee for their remarks but reminds them that, as
United States Chief Justice, he finds himself "restrained by considerations of delicacy
from particular remarks." The newspaper extra notes that Jay left town at 5 pm for the
District Court session at Troy. The last column of the "Extra" reprints an affidavit
concerning the Cherry Valley annual town meeting, 3 April 1792, and events that led to a
rival town meeting a few days later at which another slate of officers was
adopted.
