Thanks Varick for letter of 28 September. Captain Benson received letterfrom brother Robert indicating that "the Violence of the Fever at New York begins to abate." Believes sheriff's departure from city is improper -- asks Varick to report if sheriff is still out of town or has returned to duty. Sends letter (not present) to be sent on to Rufus King.
