Summary:
Received Amherst's of 27 Sept, by Mr. Austin who had a difficult crossing but is now on his way to Canada. Inserts letter to General Schuyler about Amherst's lands. As soon as he hears from Schuyler in Albany, will communicate with Amherst. Land rents here not in proportion to value, but quite low. Freeholds far more common than rented property "Except in our cities rents as yet bear no proportion to the value of the land rented and in general such lands are neither well managed nor the rents well paid." This state of affairs will probably continue as long as there are vast tracts of wilderness unoccupied. Jay's son is sensible of the honor Amherst does him; requests the favor of Amherst and young ladies presenting "our respectful compliments"
