Having inspected the letters patent of Charles II in which he grants to James Duke of York all that part of "the Maine Land of New England Begining at a Certain Place Call'd or known by the Name of St. Croix next adjoining to New Scotland in America, . . . And Also All that Island or Island Comonly Called by the Several Name or Names of Matowacks or Long Island. . . And Also All those Several Island Call'd or known by the Names of Martins Vinyard and Nantuckes Otherwis Nantukett. . . . To have and To hold. . . . together with right to govern, judge, punish, pardon as near as possible to the laws and statutes of England and fittest for the good of adventurers and inhabitants." Certified a true copy from the Public Records of the Province of New Jersey by Bowes Reed and John Thomson. Entered before the Commission to Settle the Boundary between New York and New Jersey, 31 July 1769.
