- Summary
- Has written to the Secretary at War and encloses his reply, on the subject of fortifying the port. Hopes on his prospective visit to New York to discuss with Stevens matters concerning the defense of the country. Cannot foresee what provision the next Legislature will make for the security of the state, though the results of the last session are not encouraging. Enclosure (15 May 1798) assures that the defense of New York will be attended to as soon as possible. However, equally important matters of the same nature will "abridge and delay" immediate attention to the subject.
