Childhood experiences with hemophilia; presence of fluctuating serum Factor VIII level; problems playing sports, etc., as teenager with hemophilia; early adulthood involvement with local National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) chapter; lack of knowledge regarding hemophilia in medical community in southern United States; masculinity and self-image in face of hemophilia; exposure to HIV in Factor VIII supply; subsequent anger at gay community and at pharmaceutical companies; difficulties of researchers in convincing Federal Drug Administration of presence of HIV in blood supply; effect on interpersonal relations of HIV infection; spouse’s diagnosis of HIV and problems in obtaining proper care; current involvement in hemophilia risk reduction counseling; lack of counseling for self and children after spouse’s death and subsequent self-counseling; involvement with NHF, AIDS Task Force, etc.; involvement in developing Men’s Advocacy Network of the NHF (MANN); tensions between HIV-positive and HIV-negative people with hemophilia; the comprehensive care model for people with hemophilia; political issues regarding hemophilia and HIV; changes in spiritual beliefs as response to hemophilia and HIV infection
