- Family background, education at Harvard, PhD from the University of Michigan; Air Force officer and later became a special advisor to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan; International relations scholar best known for "democratic peace"; author of "Liberalism and World Politics," written widely on the comparative history of empires and the evaluation of UN peace-keeping, wrote a policy-driven book crit iquing U.S. intervention in Vietnam; speechwriter in the Defense Department, International Peace Academy (IPA) for two years; active involvement in the Global Compact Portfolio, strategic planner of the Millennium Development Goals, outreach to the international corporate sector through the Global compact, and relations with Washington. He is the former chair of the Academic Council on the United Nations System
