Childhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; family background; Brooklyn College B.A., 1936; first job at Gimbel's, 1930; full-time position at City College's Registrar's Office, 1936; involvement with Young Communist League in Boro Park; active involvement in College Teacher's Union; anti-fascist association in mid-1930s; Nazi-Soviet Pact; formed the band, "Suspended Swing," 1941; joined the staff of Loca l 1250, 1947; a member of 1199 in 1952 until retirement in 1982; National Convention, 1957; first experience in film-making, The 1199 Story, 1957; "Harvest of Shame;" Montefiore, 1958; the hospital legislation; march on Washington, D.C., 1963; Beth-El Strike; Bronxville Strike, April, 1965; AFL-CIO Convention, 1967; First National Labor Conference against the war, Chicago, 1968; Charleston Strike, 1969; Executive of Bread and Roses since 1978; Executive Secretary of National Hospitals' Union, 1982-1983; worked for the Local 342 in January, 1983; mergers of the unions, April, 1983; Dorris Turner Campaign, 1984; the hospital unions' strike on eve of the Democratic Party Convention, 1984. There are two versions of the Foner transcript available. An initial version was done in 1989, and microfiche was created from this. A new version was created and published online in 2006 as part of the Notable New Yorkers digital project. This version adds the sessions from 2001 and featured considerable editing of content that was in the earlier version
